RACES: Xmas Cracker results

Well done everyone who came out and got a rush of blood at today's Xmas Cracker Relay and a BIG THANK YOU for the donations to Glendalough AC - we collected €75 for the club kitty which will be a great help in paying the club registration fee and hosting costs of our website. Thanks again.

Results below, well done to Niall Corrigan and our guest Andrea Chiappini from Crusaders AC who was 'capered' as he was running along peacefully in the park and we found ourselves needing one more person to make up even teams.

The relay took place on a loop just over 1.7 km in length with a sharp climb and a sharp descent with teams of two. Picture and video by Juju Jay to follow later!

Report

The teams set off from the Upper Lake car park armed with Flora's colourful relay batons and rushed for the start of the climb up next to the Poulanass Waterfall.

That section provided a real killer with talk about 'acid in the legs', 'tasting the breakfast twice' and 'blowing a gasket' among the post-race comments. The brief 'respite' at the top took runners over the two bridges on the Wicklow Way and then the furious zig-zag descent down the Pink Path to the handover.

Andrea Chiappini had opened a 42 second gap on Derek with Colm arriving a further 33 seconds back to hand over to Flora. Yours truly tried to claw back Niall but despite edging slightly closer 'Team 1' cruised home to a convincing victory with a 29 second gap. Martha and Tim arrived neck on neck handing over to Barry and Keith who had a 23 second gap to make up to 'get on the podium'.

The battle for third place was thus well and truly on and saw Barry Murray pass out Flora on the way to setting the fastest time of the day and 'the standard' for next year (7:39). Keith clawed back almost all the way to the line but Flora held on to secure fourth place for Team 4 by a narrow 9 seconds!

Andrea and Niall could celebrate with a trophy of Lindt Chocolates. In our 'prediction game' people were generally much too pessimistic but the 'bonus prize' was won by Barry Murray who predicted his time within 9 seconds (!).
